In today’s manufacturing environments, where high reliability is required, the durability and stability of adhesive bonding are becoming increasingly important.

One of the key challenges is how to prevent failure and degradation in bonded areas. In practice, damage and deterioration in adhesive joints often begin at the weakest point—namely, the interface at the edge of the bonded area. How this weakest point is reinforced has a major impact on the quality and reliability of adhesion.

In this special PlasmaTalk webinar, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Kosuke Haraga, Chief Consultant at Haraga Adhesion Technology Consulting Co., Ltd., who is also well known as the author of numerous books on adhesion technology. He will give a presentation on how to strengthen the edge interface, which is the weakest point in adhesive bonding.

From Plasmatreat, we will also introduce effective surface treatment solutions for these challenges, including surface activation using the atmospheric-pressure plasma technology Openair-Plasma® and functional coating technology using PlasmaPlus®.

Presentation by Dr. Haraga

Title:
The Weakest Point in Adhesion—Designing for Reliability from the Edge Interface

Presentation Overview:
Failure and degradation in adhesive joints begin at the weakest point of the bond. To achieve adhesive bonding with excellent quality and reliability, it is essential to strengthen this weakest area. From the perspectives of internal stress, stress concentration, and degradation, the weakest point is the interface at the edge of the bonded area. Once failure occurs at this edge interface, it can propagate along the interface in the form of a crack. In this presentation, Dr. Haraga will explain methods for strengthening this weakest point, including reducing internal stress, stress concentration, and degradation, as well as strengthening interfacial bonding through surface modification.

Topics

  • The weakest point in adhesive bonding
  • Why the edge interface of a bonded area is vulnerable
  • Methods for reducing internal stress, stress concentration, and degradation
  • Strengthening interfacial bonding through surface modification
